Mantaray’s years covering TGQ songs and approximating the band’s sound made them perfect understudies and suitable substitutes on lengthy tours. Besides opening the show with a set of their own tunes topped off with a medley of early TGQ hits, the members of Mantaray were used later in the show as a sort of backing band, augmenting The Get Quick’s line-up to replicate some of the group’s more sonically dense material. This unusual arrangement, coupled with the long-standing relationships among the players, led to many crossovers and collaborations between the two groups — to the confusion of fans and the delight of collectors.
